CELEBRATION OF CARNEGIE’S LIFE SET FOR TUESDAY, FEB. 15 AT IMS
Service at Hall of Fame Museum is open to public
INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 – A celebration of the life of longtime Indianapolis Motor Speedway Public Address announcer Tom Carnegie, who died Feb. 11 at age 91, is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday, Feb. 15 at IMS.
The service will take place at the IMS Hall of Fame Museum and is open to the public. It will be streamed live at http://www.livestream.com/indianapolismotorspeedway.
A variety of Carnegie’s friends and colleagues will share memories and stories of his incredible life and career.
An area celebrating Carnegie’s life also will be available through Monday, Feb. 28 in the Museum for fans to leave cards, notes and other tributes. Carnegie served as the Public Address announcer at IMS for 61 consecutive years, from 1946-2006. He called 61 Indianapolis 500’s, 12 Brickyard 400’s and six United States Grands Prix for millions of fans at IMS.
He became a beloved figure in the state of Indiana and among motorsports fans worldwide, coining renowned phrases such as “Heeeeeee’s on it!” and “It’s a new … track … record!” that boomed over the Speedway’s public address system with the rich, instantly recognizable baritone of his voice.
