The Old Super Deuce, Rusty Wallace, was at the Iowa State Fair (Motto: We got a boar with 50-pound testicles) Thursday to help announce the Indy Racing League will come back to the Iowa Speedway through 2009.
From the mighty Des Moines Register:
The Indy Racing League has extended its agreement with the Iowa Corn Indy 250 through 2009, Iowa Speedway officials said this afternoon.
The inaugural Iowa 250, won by Dario Franchitti, was held June 24.
"I watched Dario Franchitti follow his victory in the Indy 500 with a win here in Iowa before a standing-room-only crowd and knew we had a real winner on our hands," former NASCAR star and track co-owner Rusty Wallace said.
The Des Moines Register reported in Thursday editions that officials were poised to announce an extension for the event, which was attended by more than 35,000 estimated fans.
"More than 35,000 estimated fans"? What's an "estimated fan?" Read the entire story on the Register's site here.
Didn't you need a ticket to watch the race ?? So how come the number is "estimated" ?? The ticket office should know EXACTLY how many tickets were sold/comped .. whatever. My guess is the REAL number is much lower than 35,000 and either the IRL and/or the track are afraid to publish the truth.

I'd buy 35,000. I was at the race and the 25,000 permanent seats were full and the overflow temporary bleachers were full too. Still, the track, I'm sure, knows exactly how many tickets it sold. For some reason, IRL attendance figures are always double secret.
