SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE NAMES FREIBERG A FACE IN THE CROWD; FEATURED IN JUNE 3 ISSUE
EFFORT Racing Driver Ashley Freiberg Turns Heads at the TIME, Inc. Publication
SI cover NEW YORK, NY (May 29, 2013) - Sports Illustrated magazine, the most respected voice in sports journalism with a weekly audience of nearly 21 million adults, will highlight IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama's lone female driver Ashley Freiberg, the current series points leader. Freiberg will be showcased as part of the publication's "Faces in the Crowd" feature in the June 3, 2013 issue, on newsstands now.
Founded in 1954, Sports Illustrated is a division of Time Inc., the world's leading magazine publishing company and a subsidiary of Time Warner. The magazine's profile piece on Freiberg is part of the magazine's commitment to featuring standout amateur athletes as identified by the magazine's editors.
"Faces in the Crowd" has been published every week in Sports Illustrated since 1956, with many of the athletes going on to land the magazine's coveted cover and turning pro in their respective sports, including golfers Tiger Woods, Michelle Wie, and Olympian Gabby Douglas, among others.
Freiberg, of Bondville, VT, is fresh off an impressive debut in sportscars with sponsorship from EFFORT Racing, TrueCar, and Bell Helmets, following a transition from her open-wheel racing roots with two championships and five national karting championships to her name. She advanced to INDYCAR's Star Mazda Championship Series in 2012 before joining the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge developmental series, which prepares drivers for a professional autoracing career in sportscars.
During her season opening race at the Twelve Hours of Sebring in mid-March, she scored two top-five finishes, before earning her first podium of the season with a runner-up finish at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Heading into round five of the 2013 season, Freiberg is tied for first in the Platinum Cup championship points standings, with the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International Raceway, next on her racing agenda in her Porsche 911 for EFFORT Racing.
Freiberg's feature in the magazine has Miami Heat NBA star LeBron James gracing the cover for the 19th time.
