Iowa Speedway Advises Fans on How Best to Get Into Speedway

NEWTON, IA. (May 14, 2014) – Race fans will converge on Iowa Speedway May 16-18 to watch NASCAR’s elite drivers in the K&N Pro Series and the Nationwide Series engage in a high speed traffic jam. In preparation for “Wide-Opening Weekend,” speedway officials want to ensure race fans and area residents are ready to handle increased race day traffic by providing safe and efficient travel routes and information.

During the offseason, speedway officials consulted with the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Transportation, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department and a private traffic control company to produce a travel route plan that will allow fans attending events at Iowa Speedway to enter the facility with greater ease and efficiency.

The plan also will include signs and cones to clearly mark travel routes. Officials expect the heaviest traffic approximately two hours before and after each race.

“We are committed to making this track convenient and accessible for our race fans,” said Jimmy Small, Iowa Speedway track president. “Our goal always is—and always will be—to improve the event experience for our fans. The safe and pleasant arrival and departure of our fans, customers, and partners is an important part of the event experience, and will most certainly contribute to the success of our Wide-Opening Weekend events.”

Guests on Interstate 80 are encouraged to take Exit 168 to Iowa Speedway Drive and turn south. Continue south on Iowa Speedway Drive and parking staff will direct guests to the appropriate parking lot. Traffic will not be allowed to turn onto Rusty Wallace Drive from the Exit 168 interchange as Rusty Wallace Drive has been designated as an emergency route and will only be utilized for emergencies and to relieve traffic congestion. When exiting Iowa Speedway, guests should use the same route.

Newton Club members and Suite Ticket Holders should take Interstate 80 to Exit 164 or 168.

Guests arriving from the west are urged to use Exit 164 then continue south on U.S. 14 for about 3.6 miles. Travel east on South 60th Avenue for 2.25 miles before turning north on County Road S-74. Continue north 3.6 miles, head east on Rusty Wallace Drive where parking staff will direct guests to the appropriate parking lot.

Fans are encouraged to arrive at Iowa Speedway before 6 p.m. CT for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Casey’s General Stores 150 on Saturday, May 17. The NASCAR Nationwide Series Get to Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin-Williams is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. CT and fans are should plan to arrive early to avoid congestion. Parking lots open at 9 a.m. CT with plenty of pre-race entertainment for fans to enjoy leading up to the green flag.
